“You may not have thought about it this way, but you already are a leader. The real question is, what kind of leader are you? And more importantly, are you willing to become the kind of leader people need, where you are, right now?

In What Leaders Are, retired US Marine Nathan Neblett lays down the challenge to all of us to study the art and science of leadership, not for our own gain but for the benefit of those we serve. Consider this a handbook rich in content and abundant in wisdom throughout. Additionally, Neblett's 'Read this / Watch this / Do this' methodology gives aspiring leaders at all levels very practical ways to hone our skills and help elevate ourselves and others into the kinds of leaders our families, communities, and world need more than ever.”

Understanding Leadership Series: Book 1

By comparing historical writings with modern attitudes collected in a global survey, Nathan Neblett has explored two primary facets of leadership: what leaders are and what leaders do. Book one of the Understanding Leadership series investigates the first concept—what leaders are—to identify the core concepts of leadership and to arm you with the knowledge necessary to develop those characteristics in yourself.
You are a leader. If you want to be a better leader, read on.

What Leaders Are Tackles Questions Such As:

  • Why is it difficult to define leadership?

  • Which concepts of leadership do we “need to know” and which ones are “nice to know”?

  • How can we develop what we “need to know”?

Nathan Neblett

Nathan Neblett served for 24 years as an officer of the United States Marine Corps, during which time he observed leaders as they oversaw units comprising between 2 and 25,000 people across the four military branches and the United States Coast Guard. He was assigned as a liaison and advisor to foreign militaries in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, and worked with military personnel from Central and South America. Additionally, he served at a US Embassy, working alongside the US Department of State.

Nathan has been a pilot, instructor pilot, test pilot, teacher, soccer coach, foreign area officer, and a father. He has lead flight crews, project teams, classrooms, soccer teams, detachments, offices, and his family (along with his wife, who has done the lioness’s share of the work).

Nathan’s education includes a BS in Aerospace Engineering from the US Naval Academy, an MS in Aviation Systems from the University of Tennessee, an MA in Government and International Relations from Regent University, and an MBA at the École des Hautes Études Commerciales (EDHEC) in Nice, France where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He has also completed various military education programs.

It is his failures, as much as his successes, that created his desire to share what he has learned. He hopes to help others succeed as leaders in their careers and lives.
